Atkins and Pearce Old-Fashioned Braider

Our History

Since inception, Atkins & Pearce has maintained a strong focus on emerging innovative technologies in textiles.

It started in 1817, when our two founders, John and Henry Pearce, devised an adaptation to the cotton gin to manufacture cotton machinery. Then in 1861, when the Civil War halted trade in the south, we changed direction from a machine business to fiber handling as we began braiding candlewick. In 1942 we began manufacturing parachute cords and other cotton goods 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to support World War II efforts. Eight years later, in 1950 we pioneered the textile processing of glass fiber.

Since the development of glass fiber, we have been on the leading edge of fiber enhancement. Working with innovative fibers such as Kevlar®, Nomex®, Dyneema®, Spectra®, Teflon®, Gore®, and many more we have refined our processes to maximize the fiber’s performance when serving automotive, aerospace, electrical, medical, military, and beyond.

Today we’re headquartered in Covington, Kentucky—just 8 miles south of downtown Cincinnati where our manufacturing platform first began. Our 550,000 square foot, climate-controlled facility has proudly been ISO 9001 registered for more than two decades.

In addition to having the most diverse offering of fibers under one roof, our facility houses over 13,000 braiders, 6,000 twister spindles, 2,000 winders, and 1,000s of coating positions, coating towers, extruders, and proprietary fiber conversion platforms.
